How to Stay Hydrated and Luminous All Winter Long

Ah, winter… it’s beautiful, it’s festive, it leaves your skin parched from head to toe. As you probably know, winter can be especially taxing on skin. The air outside is frigid and dry, while heated indoor areas suck even more much-needed moisture from your skin. If you don’t work fast to prevent or treat this dryness, your skin’s protective moisture barrier can become damaged, leading to a host of other unwanted issues.

Marula Nut

During the gloomy winter months, Marula oil is our superhero of choice for keeping skin moisturised and protected so it appears pliant, firm and revitalised. Our Marula Hydrating Serum offers a burst of antioxidants and omega-9 fatty acids that fight off free radicals (which degrade collagen and elastin, making skin less firm and bouncy) [1], and help increase hydration levels, strengthen the lipid barrier and help smooth away flakiness [2]. Using this serum regularly will help maintain skin integrity, making winter skin look anything but dreary.

If you’re looking to avoid moisture-starved skin and stay brilliant and glowing all season long, follow some of our tips to care for skin during the colder months.

1. Pre-Cleanse

Double Cleanse

Begin your winter routine by first cleansing with Marula Hydrating Pre-Cleanser. While it may feel excessive to double cleanse by first removing impurities with the hydrating properties of an oil, followed by the purifying prowess of a water based cleanser, this extra step can be especially nourishing for when skin is feeling dry.

In addition to Marula, our Pre Cleanser is infused with jojoba and rosehip oils to help remove makeup, dirt and grime gently without stripping skin of its natural, protective oils that nourish the lipid bar

2. Shower Your Skin

Camu Brightening Mist

Face mist may seem unnecessary to some—after all, what can one or two spritzes really accomplish?—but during the winter, skin is drier than usual and needs more than just the traditional moisturiser during morning and night. Using a face mist has the added bonus of revitalising and quenching your skin’s thirst throughout the wintry day, while allowing skin to remain damp and receive ingredients from following treatments more efficiently.

After cleansing, follow up with the Camu Brightening Mist before applying your serums. Camu is loaded with vitamin C, and will help to brighten your complexion (the perfect antidote to “overcast” winter skin), fading away dark spots and discolouration for a luminous glow [3]. It also contains sodium hyaluronate, the salt of hyaluronic acid, (a plumping substance that can hold 1,000 times its weight in water) that will give that necessary hydration to strengthen the moisture barrier [4].

3. Layer Your Serums

Kigelia and Marula Serums

If you’re not replenishing your skin’s moisture levels as it loses its natural reservoir, you run a high risk of compromising your skin’s delicate outermost lipid (oil-water) barrier, which leads to parched, dull skin in the short term and wrinkled, sagging skin in the long term.

Start with the more aqueous Kigelia Clarifying Serum, which is designed to focus on repair—precisely what your skin needs after a day of being barraged with oil-stripping winds. After letting that sink in, ensure you bathe your skin with extra protective moisture on extra dry and cold days with Marula Hydrating Serum to lock in hydration. Just avoid the eye area to keep your mascara and eyeliner on!

4. Stay Bright During the Day

Camu Brightening Moisturiser

Cold temps don’t just come with dryness—it’s accompanied by a lackluster complexion. The two come hand in hand.

Enter the Camu Brightening Moisturiser. Not only does it provide deep, intense hydration thanks to skin-quenching ingredients like avocado, jojoba and grape seed oils (all three plant oils are great at maintaining moisture levels) [5], but it also brightens with powerful vitamin C and a huge dose of antioxidants that restore radiance and help even out skin tone. That’s a double whammy right there!

Moisturising as the daytime winter chill barrages your skin might be a no-brainer, but remember, it’s equally vital to moisturise both day and night. In fact, your time of slumber is when your skin works its hardest to repair itself, and the active ingredients in the products you use are more readily absorbed [6]. On top of that, your skin tends to get dry more easily when you sleep as your body’s temperature drops.

Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean your skin has to match the cloudiness of the season—keep it looking sunny and bright by flooding it with nutritious moisture. Be proactive and you’ll stay radiant until the spring!

Ancient Latin American Superfoods

C’mon, we’re going on a trip.  Next stop: the Latin America.

What’s got us packing our bags you might be wondering? Well, Latin America is kind of a who’s who of the superfood and nutrients world.  It could also be called “favorite smoothie ingredients ground zero”… But that doesn’t have quite the same ring.

Ancient Latin American Suerpfoods_6

From maca to chia seeds, yucca to açaí, cacao to lucuma, it’s really strength to strength down there. But on this adventure, we’re headed deep into the Amazon for one thing in particular. In search of what?  None other than the superfood superstar Camu camu.

This little berry is packing quite a powerful fruit punch.  Camu camu is both an extremely stable source of Vitamin C (watch out, Kakadu plum) and one of the highest, broad spectrum antioxidants on the planet (your move, goji berries).  Yep, nice combo ¹.

But it doesn’t stop there.  Camu camu is also packed with minerals and amino acids.  Flavonoids and ellagic acid act to neutralize free radicals.  It’s also anti-fungal and anti-bacterial which, particularly in tandem with it’s high levels of Vitamin C, help to boost the immune system.  Nature’s total package ².

It’s no wonder then that Camu camu has been used for hundreds of years and prized by Amazonian Indians as a highly nutritious food source, medicinal remedy and longevity elixir.  Yep, understandable.

Our Camu camu comes from deep within the Amazon jungle and is organically grown and extracted from the berry of the Camu camu tree (Myrciaria dubia).  But that’s just the beginning. Allow us to illuminate you.

And, of course, illuminate your skin as well.  We like to think of Camu camu as the ultimate skin brightener.  You can use it to even out skin tone and repair even damage caused by environmental stress. Thanks antioxidants.  All those anti-inflammatory properties means it diminishes imperfections and calms irritations.

We’re absolutely loving this botanical. And camu blame us?

Our Camu camu range has a strong supporting cast of ingredients ranging from avocado, jojoba and grape seed oil which nourish, revive and rejuvenate the complexion, to damascus rose water to calm, soothe irritation and quell imperfections.  Each of the ingredients in this all star line up works synergistically to enhance Camu camu’s properties. As they say, teamwork makes the dream work.

Speaking of teamwork, you could head down to Latin America.  You definitely could. But we’ve kind of got that part covered.  It’s a tough gig, but someone’s gotta do it.

Instead, save on airfare.  All you need to do is sit back, relax and enjoy nature’s brightening powerhouse.  Breathe in the natural, earthy-floral scents and create a mindful space for relaxation to enjoy your illuminating moment.  You can even let your mind wander and imagine you’re deep in the Amazon jungle. Hey, we’re full of illuminating ideas.

Allure Says This Is “Superfood for Your Face” (We Agree)

This Skin-Brightening Fruit Contains More Vitamin C Than Acai and Oranges

We call it our “Brightening Powerhouse.”

Allure calls it “Superfood for Your Face.”

And it’s NOT acai.
We’re talking about Camu camu berry, a fruit that grows on trees deep within the Amazon basin. Its claim to fame? Camu camu explodes with vitamin C—more than oranges (a.k.a. the poster child for vitamin C) and more than the almighty acai berry. In fact, many experts believe that Camu camu boasts the highest natural concentration of vitamin C of all plant sources. (No big deal, right?)

Because of its extraordinary antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial qualities, Camu camu berry has become quite the popular supplement, which is usually available in powder form. People consume the fruit to reinforce the immune system, keep chronic diseases and infections at bay, improve eye health and even improve cognition and mood.

And research shows this isn’t a fad. In a review published in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, the authors wrote, “Camu camu fruits are a major source of a range of bioactive compounds. These include many polyphenols (flavonoids, phenolic acids, tannins, stilbenes, and lignans),” adding that the berry also contains “a range of amino acids, organic acids […] and fatty acids (predominantly stearic, linoleic, and oleic acid).”

Their conclusion? “The results of these studies point to a potentially substantial role for Camu camu in multimodal, integrative disease and wellness management, notably with regard to inflammatory conditions.

Why You Need Camu camu on Your Skin—STAT

As with many gems of nature, if something is that healthy to eat, chances are high it’s good for skin, too. Camu camu is the skin care sensation you’ve been waiting for.

Thanks to its unbelievably high vitamin C content, it delivers :

  • Visibly brighter, luminous skin: Vitamin C is the go-to nutrient for evening out skin tone and boosting that gorgeous, healthy glow
  • Reduced spots and scars: Estheticians and dermatologists have been obsessed with vitamin C for its ability to lighten or prevent hyperpigmentation and acne scars
  • Major preventative -aging power: Vitamin C is one of the most powerful (and proven) antioxidants, so applying it to your skin helps combat free radical damage, which is the top trigger of visible aging. This means firmer, smoother skin for longer
  • Anti-inflammatory action: Not only is vitamin C a natural anti-inflammatory, but Camu camu also contains other amino acids and nutrients that are highly anti-inflammatory
  • Clarified complexion: Although there’s currently no research on Camu camu’s effect on acne, the fruit has been shown to boast antibacterial and antimicrobial There’s also an abundance of anecdotal evidence that indicates topically applying camu camu can help keep breakouts at bay. Keep in mind, too, that Camu camu possesses highly anti-inflammatory powers (acne is an inflammation problem)

Explore our Camu Range through a mindful  three-step ritual  to keep your complexion bright, radiant, healthy and youthfully resilient all season long. Your skin will glow with joy!
