2019 Beauty Trends We’re Totally on Board With

Get ready—beauty is breaking new ground! In the effort to simplify our lives and take care of ourselves and the planet, we’re seeing the beauty industry embrace stronger values. From product manufacturing to the effects they have on our bodies, we’re seeing a movement toward simplicity, transparency and the creation of products that work in harmony with nature. At Luxe Botanics, we’ve picked out a few of our favourite new beauty trends for you.

Blue Beauty

Blue Beauty

“Going green” has been widespread lingo even before juice cleanses were born, but there’s a new colour in town: blue. “Going blue” [1] means going beyond green, emphasizing more than just being “environmentally friendly” (which doesn’t always necessarily mean the same thing to everyone). Going blue is all about giving back to our planet to offset existing environmental damage. Beauty brands are going blue by planting trees, donating to environmental causes, using recycled materials in their packaging and giving back to the community, to name a few. When companies go blue, you can feel good about the products you buy, knowing the company behind the brand is helping to heal the planet.

marula-650x365With trends like K-beauty that rose in popularity last year, skincare regimens can get overwhelming. From serums and lotions to acids and peptides, the list can get lengthy, and let’s face it, there’s only so much counter space! Now, people want to streamline their beauty routines and limit the number of ingredients we use on our skin. With a new minimalistic [2] approach to skincare, multipurpose products are appearing. Fewer, more effective ingredients and less packaging waste is the new “more.”

The Microbiome microbiome

We know the importance of keeping the bacteria in our digestive systems balanced, but what about on our skin? The skin is the largest organ in the body—and its surface is teeming with friendly bacteria, viruses and fungi. This naturally protective, delicately balanced ecosystem is our skin’s microbiome [3]. Daily scrubbing and the use of soaps and abrasive ingredients can disrupt this balance, robbing the skin of its natural protection. We’re now seeing a rise in skincare formulas that contain probiotics [4] to help skin stay balanced and maintain its natural health and beauty, ultimately leading to the truly glowing complexion we all crave.

Formulation transparency photo 16-06-2016, 16 28 57

Environmentally conscious, health-minded consumers want to know the ingredients in their beauty products and how they were obtained. Companies have traditionally maintained some secrecy in their product formulations, but they’re now balancing it with the consumer’s right to know what they are putting on their body. Companies are researching their supply chains and providing consumers with more information about what goes into their products. This formulation transparency [5] is another trend we love.

Skin-healing solutions

Skin HealingLet’s be real: beauty products often focus on concealing flaws rather than eliminating them. Today we’re seeing more bona fide skin-nourishing products with healing [6] ingredients to help ease inflammation, smooth fine lines [7], even out skin tone and calm damage done by sun and pollution. The health-savvy consumers of today want more than to just cover up their skin’s flaws—they want to fix them.

Consumers are on a journey of explorationlbwk2aug2-08

At last! New, innovative brands still under the radar are catching consumers’ eyes in their quest to find the newest, most effective products with both health and beauty benefits. With unique stories and compelling missions behind them, indie brands are now sought after—as first choice. That’s because people are looking for authenticity, simplicity, sustainability and effectiveness in their skin care.

With trends like these, we have more choices, knowledge and control than ever before over what we use on our skin. There is new purpose toward protecting and healing our planet and ourselves. These values, along with advancements in scientific knowledge, simplification and transparency for the consumer, mean that we now have access to the best skincare products ever seen. Now that’s a trend worth exploring.

Nature: The Best (Free) Gift To Yourself This Holiday

What could possibly be the best gift to yourself this holiday season? It’s not that luxurious sheet set you’ve been eyeing nor the latest tech gadget (regardless of how good the Black Friday deal was!). The best gift you can give yourself is giving your mind, body and soul the opportunity to indulge in nature.

We often take nature for granted—or are simply too busy to really enjoy our beautiful planet. But the truth is that nature is an incredibly powerful healer. Read on for a look into how nature can help restore your health, kick off your shoes, and then simply enjoy earth. You’ll be so glad you did come the New Year!

Serene Sensations

What switching to a natural beauty routine means for your overall health 2 - Luxe Botanics

Simply put, nature can help calm you.

If you’ve ever taken a walk in a forest, then you might have noticed the way breathing in that fresh, pine-scented air and soaking in the beauty of the greenery can be extremely restorative.

Shinrin-yoku, which literally translates to forest bathing, originated in Japan in the 1980s, and continues to be practiced today. It’s a type of nature therapy that has been shown in studies to help lower cortisol levels (the stress hormone), pulse rates and blood pressure [1].

No small feat right? Given that stress is a major contributing factor towards many modern-day health complaints. Also, you’ve probably noticed how managing your stress levels can visibly boost your complexion or how much more your skin glows and stays clear when you’re feeling balanced. Yet another incentive to take longer walks in a natural environment.

Physiological Progress

It’s not all about mental calm and de-stressing though (although the benefits of this can’t be overstated). Forest bathing and a return to nature can have incredible effects on the physical state as well.

Studies have shown that for people with diabetes, nature immersion can have positive effects on blood glucose levels [2]. Observing eighty-seven non-insulin dependent diabetic patients, after walking several kilometers in the forest and experiencing the fresh air and beautiful surroundings, their blood glucose levels actually dropped. Lowering blood glucose levels with the simple act of walking in nature is quite remarkable. It’s an activity that almost anybody can do, making it accessible as well as beneficial.

Immunity Now

Ancient Latin American Suerpfoods_4

Your immune system might not be a single entity like, say, your heart or your lungs, but it’s one of the most vital parts of the miracle that is the human body.

Interestingly enough, immersing yourself in forest bathing can help strengthen your immune system. A strong immune system will guard well against infection and other types of diseases. In fact, a study on the importance of nature for health found that “a forest bathing trip increases human natural killer activity.” [3] Natural killer (NK) cells are a type of white blood cell involved in innate immunity and play a huge role in fighting against virally infected cells that can lead to diseases like cancer.  The study in question found that a single forest bathing trip was enough to significantly increase NK activity, NK cells and anti-cancer proteins. It is believed the phytoncides released from trees and the general decrease in stress levels helped bring about this result [4].

Return To Your Roots

City life has its charms, but it can be to our detriment to ignore nature. Allowing ourselves to soak it all up and truly bathe in nature, in all its glory, can be rejuvenating, therapeutic and extremely healthy. This is a reminder, a call to action, to give yourself into nature as often as you can. The benefits are too great to be passed by. Even as the busy whirr of city life holds you in its clutches, remember to take some time for yourself, whether it’s in a lovely park or an actual forest, to commune with nature.

It’s easy (and understandable) to cozy up on the couch with your loved ones, especially when the chill starts making its way into the air, but when you have a moment, put on your warmest sweater and shoes give yourself the gift of nature. Exhale your stresses and inhale the peace.

Happy Holidays from the Luxe Botanics Team!

How to Stay Hydrated and Luminous All Winter Long

Ah, winter… it’s beautiful, it’s festive, it leaves your skin parched from head to toe. As you probably know, winter can be especially taxing on skin. The air outside is frigid and dry, while heated indoor areas suck even more much-needed moisture from your skin. If you don’t work fast to prevent or treat this dryness, your skin’s protective moisture barrier can become damaged, leading to a host of other unwanted issues.

Marula Nut

During the gloomy winter months, Marula oil is our superhero of choice for keeping skin moisturised and protected so it appears pliant, firm and revitalised. Our Marula Hydrating Serum offers a burst of antioxidants and omega-9 fatty acids that fight off free radicals (which degrade collagen and elastin, making skin less firm and bouncy) [1], and help increase hydration levels, strengthen the lipid barrier and help smooth away flakiness [2]. Using this serum regularly will help maintain skin integrity, making winter skin look anything but dreary.

If you’re looking to avoid moisture-starved skin and stay brilliant and glowing all season long, follow some of our tips to care for skin during the colder months.

1. Pre-Cleanse

Double Cleanse

Begin your winter routine by first cleansing with Marula Hydrating Pre-Cleanser. While it may feel excessive to double cleanse by first removing impurities with the hydrating properties of an oil, followed by the purifying prowess of a water based cleanser, this extra step can be especially nourishing for when skin is feeling dry.

In addition to Marula, our Pre Cleanser is infused with jojoba and rosehip oils to help remove makeup, dirt and grime gently without stripping skin of its natural, protective oils that nourish the lipid bar

2. Shower Your Skin

Camu Brightening Mist

Face mist may seem unnecessary to some—after all, what can one or two spritzes really accomplish?—but during the winter, skin is drier than usual and needs more than just the traditional moisturiser during morning and night. Using a face mist has the added bonus of revitalising and quenching your skin’s thirst throughout the wintry day, while allowing skin to remain damp and receive ingredients from following treatments more efficiently.

After cleansing, follow up with the Camu Brightening Mist before applying your serums. Camu is loaded with vitamin C, and will help to brighten your complexion (the perfect antidote to “overcast” winter skin), fading away dark spots and discolouration for a luminous glow [3]. It also contains sodium hyaluronate, the salt of hyaluronic acid, (a plumping substance that can hold 1,000 times its weight in water) that will give that necessary hydration to strengthen the moisture barrier [4].

3. Layer Your Serums

Kigelia and Marula Serums

If you’re not replenishing your skin’s moisture levels as it loses its natural reservoir, you run a high risk of compromising your skin’s delicate outermost lipid (oil-water) barrier, which leads to parched, dull skin in the short term and wrinkled, sagging skin in the long term.

Start with the more aqueous Kigelia Clarifying Serum, which is designed to focus on repair—precisely what your skin needs after a day of being barraged with oil-stripping winds. After letting that sink in, ensure you bathe your skin with extra protective moisture on extra dry and cold days with Marula Hydrating Serum to lock in hydration. Just avoid the eye area to keep your mascara and eyeliner on!

4. Stay Bright During the Day

Camu Brightening Moisturiser

Cold temps don’t just come with dryness—it’s accompanied by a lackluster complexion. The two come hand in hand.

Enter the Camu Brightening Moisturiser. Not only does it provide deep, intense hydration thanks to skin-quenching ingredients like avocado, jojoba and grape seed oils (all three plant oils are great at maintaining moisture levels) [5], but it also brightens with powerful vitamin C and a huge dose of antioxidants that restore radiance and help even out skin tone. That’s a double whammy right there!

Moisturising as the daytime winter chill barrages your skin might be a no-brainer, but remember, it’s equally vital to moisturise both day and night. In fact, your time of slumber is when your skin works its hardest to repair itself, and the active ingredients in the products you use are more readily absorbed [6]. On top of that, your skin tends to get dry more easily when you sleep as your body’s temperature drops.

Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean your skin has to match the cloudiness of the season—keep it looking sunny and bright by flooding it with nutritious moisture. Be proactive and you’ll stay radiant until the spring!

The Secret Diary of a Mindful Beauty

If you’re in the know about plant-based goodness and green natural beauty, That’s Chelsea, aka Chelsea A. Williams, will be no stranger to you. A force to be reckoned with, she’s a wellness warrior on a mission to improve the health of communities around her and to inspire change. And inspire she does.

A health communications strategist, media contributor, oh and avid blogger, Chelsea somehow manages to balance it all (she is a Libra afterall). She appears regularly as a thought leader in the mainstream media and is an ambassador for the W.E.L.L. Summit.

Described by ESSENCE magazine as helping to Defy all preconceived notions about living a plant-based lifestyle” (you just need to take a look at her mouthwatering recipes to see why), and commended by Beauty Independent for her presence “Bringing an underrepresented voice in a green beauty segment criticized for its lack of diversity”, Chelsea is a role model to many, amounting a series of accolades for her work.

With a Masters in Public Health Nutrition (MPH) and a leader of Live Sacred DC, a series of mindful wellness experiences for women in the District, it’s no wonder why.

Noodle lover, raw food fanatic and a constant source of daily motivation.

Ladies and gentlemen, That’s Chelsea…

What one word best describes you?

What’s your superpower? And your weakness? (because we’re all human)

My superpower: Discernment. Weakness: Overthinking

A moment that has defined you most in life?

Making the decision to transition to a plant-based, non-toxic lifestyle has defined me most in life. I not only improved my overall health and well-being, but through this change, have helped improve the health of family members, friends, and now my readers. It’s truly a testament to the fact that our personal choices can positively impact others.

Your go to feel good ritual?

I love being outdoors. While, it has not quite become a ritual for me, doing some form of physical outside activity daily energizes me and improves my outlook on life. Hiking and swimming at the beach are my favorite outdoor activities.

Your greatest passion?

My greatest passion is learning more about plant-based living, sharing my knowledge, and teaching others how to improve their health and wellness literacy.

Who do you admire most and why?

I admire Lalah Delia of Vibrate Higher Daily. Lalah is a spiritual writer and wellness educator. I have been following her work for years. I admire her emotional maturity and resilience.

Tell us something about yourself not many people know? You recently shared your story about being an only child and seeking solitude, showing a vulnerable side that often isn’t shared)

I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design with a minor in Advertising. I also can draw and paint (oil and acrylic) and have won several awards for my artwork.

What keeps you awake at night?

My struggle with pursuing entrepreneurship full-time versus balancing entrepreneurship with my 9 to 5 keeps me awake at night.

You’ve struggled with your own health issues in the past suffering from Grave’s disease and more recently hypothyroidism. Can you tell us more about the role your diet has played in managing these conditions and how That’s Chelsea evolved

Since transitioning to a plant-based diet, I have experienced an increase in energy levels, improved digestion, better skin, longer and stronger hair, and better weight management (something that can be difficult for someone living with hypothyroidism.) That’s Chelsea originally started as a creative outlet. I knew I wanted to start a blog, but I didn’t want to share products or lifestyle practices that I knew were potentially harmful to others. That’s when I decided I would attempt to carve out my own lane.

You were recognised as one of The Daily Record’s Successful by 40 recipients for its Very Important Professional Awards last year and most recently nominated as Entrepreneurs Rock 2018’s Best Blogger, but what achievement are you most proud of to date?

I am most proud of working toward a position that allows me to be an underrepresented voice in the green living community.

You say you sometimes feel unworthy of all the good things that come your way. Why is that?

Although my work ethic is very strong, I recognize that I have been able to take advantage of certain opportunities in my entrepreneurial journey because I have more access to reliable transportation, healthy food, and education than some others in my community. Additionally, I am a lighter-skinned Black woman and colorism is very real, especially in the green beauty industry.

Health communications strategist, media contributor, wellness blogger and community activist.  What’s been your biggest transformation?

My biggest transformation was changing my career path from graphic design to public health. I was always known as “the artist.” However, after dealing with my own personal health struggles, and early experiences working in the pharmaceutical industry, I found a new passion in the health and wellness industry. However, I could argue that sharing health-related information in a credible, yet fun and engaging way is an artform.

We like to think of ourselves as explorers and love to discover the unknown. You say you’ve recently been thinking about the next step for your business. What’s the next big adventure in store for you?

I’m honestly not quite sure. I thought becoming a board-certified health coach would be my next step, but I decided that was not the route I wanted to take. I’m currently considering training to become an Integrative and Functional Nutrition Certified Practitioner, but I’m taking things one step at a time. Health and wellness is my life’s work. There’s no need for me to rush.

If you were a Luxe Botanics botanical, which one would you be?

Camu Camu Berry

Thank you for leaving such a positive impact on everyone you meet Chelsea!

Wellness. Where’s the Science?

What do you think of when you hear the word “wellness”?

You might envision your weekend nature hikes, morning meditation or daily golden milk latte. Maybe wellness is simply reclining on the couch and shutting off your phone. Or you might think of wellness as a total hoax (i.e. you don’t believe in seven-day green juice cleanses to “detox” your body and you’ll never understand the health claims behind vaginal jade eggs). [1]

Chances are you’re somewhere in between. Whatever side of the spectrum you skew towards, there’s one thing we can likely all agree on: wellness does not imply science.

With that said, in honour of World Science Day, we wanted to look more closely at the importance of science in the pursuit of wellness.

The Looming Problem With Wellness

More and more, the wellness industry is being scrutinized and criticized[2] by both health experts and consumers. That’s because the industry is increasingly making health claims, including those that are far-fetched (some are more subtle and others are even valid, making these claims more confusing than ever to the layperson).

Once upon a time many of the wellness practices popular today were considered fringe customs of unconventional groups (e.g. “hippies”) but these days, wellness trends—from kale juice and herbal supplements to flower essences and crystals—have become the cool kid on the block. Even your most skeptical friend has probably tried bone broth or a cocktail infused with activated charcoal.

But let’s take a step back and ask: What exactly is wellness? And should it be brushed off?

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, wellness is “the quality or state of being in good health especially as an actively sought goal.”

And that’s a great goal.

The challenge is when wellness companies say their products will make changes like eliminate inflammation, cure depression or balance hormones when there is minimal or zero evidence to show it. We believe wellness should be approached with a scientific eye as you actively seek your wellness goals, whether that’s more energy, a happier mood or heathier skin.

How Wellness Can Be Achieved Through Skin Care – and Science

At Luxe Botanics, we rely on our core botanicals, Marula, Kigelia africana and Camu camu, to drive the efficacy of our formulas, undoubtedly drawing from nature to achieve positive visible changes.

But we don’t believe natural always equates to efficacy. Quality skin care begins—and ends—with science.

A science-backed approach is one of the founding tenets of Luxe Botanics. (Our founder Jené Roestorf is a biotechnologist, so science naturally flows in her veins!). This is why our core botanicals and other beneficial ingredients we incorporate into our skin care are only those that have been extensively studied or proven—not to mention sustainable, certified organic and wild harvested whenever possible.

It is a promise to ourselves—and you —to maintain the highest standards when it comes to the scientific merit of our ingredients. But that doesn’t mean we aren’t all about wellness, too.

Wellness is the pursuit of feeling healthy. And we believe wellness is a means of self-care. One way to practice self-care and achieve wellness is investing and committing to a skincare ritual.

A skin care ritual is all about nurturing yourself in ways to feel more positive and relaxed inside and out, and nourishing the largest organ of your body by feeding it with nutrients that have demonstrated efficacy.

For us, wellness and science to go hand in hand. Because wellness isn’t achievable unless the tools you use are actually effective. This is what we aim to deliver at Luxe Botanics, and that is our promise to you.

Happy World Science Day!

Naturally yours,

The Luxe Botanics Team

The Mindful Beauty Series: Meet Beverly Fink

The Secret Diary of a Mindful Beauty

At the dawn of the supermodel there was Beverly Fink, make-up artist to the stars.
With a collective 40 years in TV, print and 36 magazine covers under her belt, Beverly is synonymous with the likes Cindy Crawford, Niki Taylor and Claudia Schiffer to name a few.

Her career reads like a fashion week fairytale, full of the glitz and glamour one would expect, but in 2010 after decades of working in the industry, Beverly was diagnosed with chronic autoimmune and inflammatory condition. She puts this down to her hectic work lifestyle and the effects of being exposed to excessive amounts of personal care products over the years.

Now at the tender age of 73 (and the looks of a woman 20 years younger) life is just beginning where Beverly has evolved into an educator of clean beauty, a consultant for the terminally ill and continues her work as green makeup artist to help women make better, healthier choices.

Introducing to you the formidable Beverly Fink….

What one word best describes you?

I asked a dear dear friend to describe me in one word, she said “Inspiring” – I liked it and am going with it!

What’s your superpower? And your weakness? (because we’re all human)

Perfectionism; It’s my superhuman power because it drives me to continue to push, grow, expand … but it can double as my weakness too, because it causes me to have very high expectations, especially of myself and others. No one is Perfect!  So I do suffer with this

A moment that has defined you most in life?

My renaissance as a person, through transitions in my personal life, health challenges, and new directions in my career, they have all lead me to reinventing myself and putting focus on helping others and myself.  Whether it be through spiritual quotes I’m feeling from my heart, expressing the importance of having a healthier lifestyle, meditation, a plant based diet and trying to stay strong.

Your go to feel good ritual?

Sound bowl and gong healing Meditation with Luchi Estevez. The vibrational energy helps me mentally, physically and to be more centered in Love.

Your greatest passion?

It was fashion at one time. I lived for it. However, now it’s extending love, positivity and smiles to people I meet everyday and a kind word that will brighten someone’s day. I get high on happiness.

Who do you admire most and why?

Audrey Hepburn. I loved her movies as a teen especially Breakfast at Tiffany’s. She was very influential to me. To see how Audrey grew older gracefully, privately with her family away from the limelight. Not to mention being a Humanitarian, and an icon for style.

Tell us something about yourself not many people know

I am confident and yet insecure … I am a blend of both.

What keeps you awake at night?

Social media keeps me up way past my bedtime.

In the past you’ve said, ‘If I can save one woman from going through the health issues I’ve been through, it’s worth it’, and you now work with women who have breast cancer. Tell us more about this and the positive impact you’ve seen on these women?

I work with  women with breast cancer, helping them feel beautiful and good about themselves by teaching and demonstrating makeup lessons and tips so they can make healthier choices with non toxic beauty. I also have life changing health issues so I must concentrate on myself to have some quality of life. It is a full time job now to take care of myself with many chronic illnesses, and trying to look the best I can.

You look incredible. A true testament to looking and feeling as good as you can every day. What’s working for you?

Thank you! What works for me is alkaline water, great organic skincare, a plant-based diet,  lots of yummy serums to make my dry skin glow and rehydrate. Cleansing before bed no matter how tired I feel … and my mediations.

In your career heyday clean beauty didn’t exist. Are you seeing perceptions change and green beauty looks being increasingly curated on the catwalk?

To be honest not as much on the catwalk because you need stronger pigmented makeup and there are only a handful that I know of that have color lines made for runway. But behind the scenes you are hearing of more and more runway models who are most conscious of what is being put on their skin and wanting healthier options. Clothes and makeup in general are getting more sustainable, but we still have a way to go!  The attention and intention is there and evolving.

Makeup artist, brand ambassador, green beauty advocate and now consultant for terminally ill women. What’s been your biggest transformation?

Each of them of been equally transformative. All these colorful, moving and humbling chapters have left ever-lasting impressions into the blueprint of my life. Being a woman in the fashion and make-up industry back in the 80’s and 90’s was exhilarating, powerful and glamorous. But incredibly hard work. It was a very jet-set lifestyle one in which I got to experience major accomplishments in my profession and meet some of my favorite icons in fashion and photography, but there comes a time when you want more quality of life, not so much quantity. After taking time off to care for my mother, many changes happened in my life, a refocus of what was most important. I gained patience and inner strength.

We like to think of ourselves as explorers and love to discover the unknown. What’s been the biggest adventure you’ve been on or are yet do?

I have wonderful memories of Europe. Something that stands out specifically is when my parents took me to the Canadian Rockies in my 30s and they said “someday you will thank us”, and I do now, even though I’m a city girl.  For my next adventure I would love a spiritual retreat.

If you were a Luxe Botanics botanical, which one would you be?

Marula oil! It works well with my dry sensitive skin and also helps with my inflammation. I also like my skin to be plump with a serious glow.

Thanks for brightening our day Beverly. Mission accomplished!
